How often should you do hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Session frequency depends on your goals. A plain-English guide to how many HBOT sessions per week, how long each one takes, and when to expect results.
The short answer
Most hyperbaric oxygen therapy protocols call for three to five sessions per week over four to eight weeks. For general wellness and energy support, one to two sessions per week is a common starting point. The right frequency depends on what you are trying to achieve, how your body responds, and the guidance of your practitioner.
There is no single number that works for everyone. What follows is a plain-English breakdown of how session frequency varies by goal, what a typical treatment plan looks like, and how we pace HBOT at Element.
What affects how many sessions you need
Three factors shape your HBOT schedule. Your practitioner will assess all three during your initial consultation and recommend a starting programme. This is reviewed and adjusted throughout your protocol.
Your goal
Someone recovering from a physical injury will follow a different cadence to someone focused on long-term cellular health. Our structured protocols are built around specific goals, and the HBOT frequency within each one reflects that.
Your starting point
Acute conditions generally respond faster and require a shorter, more intensive programme. Chronic conditions and fatigue benefit from a more gradual pace. The severity of your starting point helps your practitioner set the right intensity from day one.
Your individual response
Some people notice changes within the first week. Others require two to three weeks of consistent sessions before the effects become clear. Your practitioner monitors your response at every block and adjusts accordingly.
Recommended frequency by goal
The right number of sessions per week depends on what you are working toward. Here is how we typically pace HBOT across our six-week protocols.
General wellness and energy
One to two sessions per week is typical. Many people maintain this cadence long-term as part of a broader health routine, often through one of our memberships. Sessions last 60 minutes at lower pressure (1.3 to 1.5 ATA).
Sports recovery and performance
Three to five sessions per week during training blocks or competition periods. Athletes often complete a focused block of 10 to 20 sessions through our Longevity protocol, then drop to a maintenance frequency. Sessions last 60 minutes.
Post-surgical recovery and acute injury
Our Injury Recovery protocol runs three to five sessions per week for six weeks (typically 20 HBOT sessions total), paired with red light therapy and Theta Chamber sessions. The aim is to support the body's repair processes during the critical recovery window.
Chronic conditions and persistent fatigue
Our Supportive Care protocol starts at three sessions per week, deliberately paced. The total programme runs 16 HBOT sessions over six weeks, combined with red light and a heavier Theta cadence. The pace is slower because the nervous system in these cases benefits from a gentler approach.
Skin recovery
Our Skin Recovery protocol includes 12 HBOT sessions over six weeks (twice weekly), layered with daily red light therapy. This cadence is designed to support skin barrier function and inflammatory regulation alongside existing dermatology care.
How long is each session?
A single HBOT session lasts 60 to 90 minutes at treatment pressure, depending on your protocol. On top of that, allow 10 to 15 minutes for pressurisation at the start and 7 to 10 minutes for decompression at the end. Your total time in the clinic is approximately 80 to 120 minutes per visit.
During the session itself, you breathe normally inside the chamber. Most people read, listen to music, or sleep. Our Zeugma soft-shell chamber has a touchscreen and panoramic windows. The OxyHealth hard-shell is a lie-down design suited for longer sessions. Read more about our two chamber types.
What does a typical treatment plan look like?
At Element, HBOT sits inside structured six-week protocols. A typical plan has three phases.
Weeks 1-2: Foundation
You attend three to four sessions per week at a moderate pressure. Your practitioner establishes a baseline and monitors your response.
Weeks 3-4: Loading
Session frequency may increase to four or five per week, and pressure may be adjusted upward. This is where the cumulative effect of repeated sessions begins to build.
Weeks 5-6: Integration
Frequency tapers back to three sessions per week. Your practitioner reviews your progress against baseline and builds a maintenance plan for after the protocol ends. Many people then transition to a membership-based maintenance schedule of one to two sessions per week.
How soon will you notice results?
This varies. People recovering from acute injuries or physical strain often report improved energy and reduced discomfort within the first one to two weeks. For chronic conditions, two to three weeks of consistent sessions is more typical before changes become noticeable. Skin-related improvements tend to develop gradually over three to four weeks.
The research on HBOT consistently points to cumulative benefit: the effects build with repeated exposure. A single session has measurable physiological effects (increased plasma oxygen, reduced inflammatory markers), but sustained change requires a consistent programme.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do HBOT every day?
Yes, daily sessions are safe for most people and are common in intensive recovery programmes. Our most comprehensive protocols include up to five sessions per week. Your practitioner will determine whether daily sessions are appropriate for your situation.
Is one HBOT session enough to feel a difference?
A single session produces measurable changes in blood oxygen levels and may leave you feeling clearer or more energised. However, the benefits of HBOT are cumulative. Most people need a consistent series of sessions before noticing sustained changes.
How many total HBOT sessions will I need?
This depends on your goals. Wellness programmes typically start at 10 to 20 sessions. Recovery protocols run 16 to 20 sessions over six weeks. More intensive programmes may extend to 40 sessions. Your practitioner will recommend a total based on your consultation.
What happens if I miss a session?
Missing an occasional session will not undo your progress. Consistency matters more than perfection. If you need to reschedule, your practitioner can adjust your programme accordingly. Extended gaps (more than a week) may require a modified plan.
How long do HBOT results last?
The duration of benefits depends on the condition being addressed and your ongoing routine. Many people find that maintaining one to two sessions per week after completing a protocol sustains results. Without maintenance, some benefits may diminish over several months.
